Collection contains Cheney's pocket diary for 1865 (mostly scattered entries of personal financial matters); a 19 page handwritten manuscript of his impressions of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lookout Mountain in 1863-1864; newspaper clippings (1865) from the Weekly Courier of Syracuse, N.Y., and one clipping from the Post Standard, Syracuse, N.Y., 19 Sept. 1930, of article "Monument to Timothy Cheney."

During the Civil War he became the leader of the Peace Democrats, also known as Copperheads, who supported negotiating with the Southern states to end the war.
